Safe for work (filtered content) Safe for work

Birth of Chan4Chan
* Chan4Chan (a previous version) was created in January of 2009.
* The idea was to automatically gather images from busy image sources.
* Tagging and titles were added after the first 100 images.
* In March of 2009 Chan4Chan was re-written from scratch.
* An old personal collection was submitted to the database in ~50 pieces.
* Commenting was added later, but hardly anybody used it for months.
* Registration was added in July of 2009. First user to register was Bubble :)

Target audience
* Lovers of memes and funny / rare internet images.
* People who can handle freedom of speech - and filter through raw content to find their own gems.
* Researchers, psychologists :)
* Designers looking for photoshop material.
* Anyone bored and open to these images.
* GoLow and MindFuck game players.

Why Chan4Chan owns
* Chan4Chan delivers. New images from many different sources every minute.
* No b/s just images by the lot according to your search and view preferences.
* All images in the archive are either epic or have a place in history of funpix for some reason, they are worth seeing.
* Everybody can be a moderator - any of the incoming or new archive images can be deleted, even anonymously.
* Chan4Chan supports freedom of speech. You get a unique atmosphere of chaos mixed with strange humor.
* Whenever you're bored, Chan4Chan has always something new and something old that you haven't seen yet.

Image viewing filters
Global settings: These are remembered for the whole session. Global setting URL's passed redirect to original page.
* /nsfw/off: Turns NSFW mode off. Default is on. Images in the archive marked as NSFW are filtered from results if off.
* /fresh/on: Turns Fresh mode on. Default is off. Images added to the archive since last review are hidden if off.
* /bump/off: Turns Bump mode off. Default is on. Turned on, images are sorted by comments (otherwise, date of image).

Per-page settings: These are active for the current page with the result. Settings stay part of the URL.
* /thumb/off: Turns thumbnails off. Default is on. Turned off, original images are shown (resized by browser to max 1024).
* /category/cat: Only images in the cat category are shown (cat can be random, porn, jailbait).

Surfing tags, search, links
* To view images with specific tags, use the URL chan4chan.com/tags/keyword1_keyword2_etc.
* To search images both by tags and by title too, use chan4chan.com/search/Title_words.
* There is a special tag: /search/animated to look for images that have more than 1 frame.
* The special search keyword mypix gives you images in the archive by your userid (if you're logged in)
* You can combine 'animated' with other tags too, for example: /search/animated_FAIL.
* Adding /thumb/off to the URL is recommended when linking. Example: /archive/thumb/off/tags/birds.
* To view an image by ID, use /search/id:123, or /archive/123/Any_Image_Title_You_Like.

The image review process
* Review is the process of a moderator viewing an avg. of 1000 images added from /incoming or /submit by visitors, selecting good images and deleting everything else.
* Image review happens once or twice a week. It starts with the moderator locking all images.
* The moderator sees a huge dump of thumbnails. At the bottom there is a 'Delete selected' button. He clicks 'Select all'. All images are selected. Good images get de-selected and karma is given to the OPs. Finally, 'delete' button is clicked :)
* Things that count to get an image approved: epicness, humor, high resolution, rarity, historical purpose, popularity, shock value, originality, cuteness, information quality and quantity.
* Things that cause an image to be deleted: low resolution, boring, already being in the /archive, huge watermark, illegal content, etc.
* After deletion, all images are tagged one by one. If there is a text on the image, it gets set as the the image title.
* Images get watermarked unless there is already one, or if it would be inappropriate / annoying for some reason.
* After this, categories are verified on new images, NSFW flag is set according to content on all of them.
* After review, a time marker is set. This means that visitors who have fresh mode off (default behaviour) suddenly get to see all the newly added images.
* Turning bumps off (/archive/bump/off) is recommended to see newly added images on the first page(s).
* Followers on Twitter get a notification.

How do I shot web?
How do I find an image by url (either chan4chan or 4chan)?
Just go to /news and enter the URL in the 'Undelete' box. You will be taken to either /incoming or /archive if it's in the database.

How do I add an image comment?
To add an archive image as a comment reply look at the "Link to this" URL below the image comments. There is a number (after /archive/). Start your comment with :123: if the ID is 123.

I submitted / added an image but I don't see it in /archive!
To see it, turn fresh mode on. If it once existed but later disappeared, it was probably deleted on review.

I am trying to view /incoming but it says I have to wait some hours/minutes. Why?
To make re-registrations useless, there is a waiting period of a day before newly registered users can view /incoming.

Random Image Box

Do you have a website? Surprise your visitors with a random SFW (non-NSFW) image on your site.

Add a random Chan4Chan image to your site!

HTML Code:

Archive image boxes
* Image title: Image title is usually set if there is a text on the image. If no title is set, a text made up of the tags is displayed.
* Source: Can be WEB / sitename, SUBMIT / chan4chan, or UPLOAD (not yet available).
* URL: Original URL the image was mirrored from.
* Info: Image format and size (width, height, file size). Number of frames, if animated.
* Added by: Anonymous (or real) handle of user who clicked 'add to random' or submitted the image. If not logged in, end of hostname. If no hostname, first two digits of IP address.
* Category: Category the image is in. If clickable, then clicking it moves the image to the next category (random, porn, jailbait).
* NSFW: NSFW (=not-safe-for-work) flag. Sexual content, gore, nudity, porn is considered NSFW. Default yes. If clickable, toggles NSFW flag.
* Delete: If unlocked image is already in the archive or illegal, you may delete it.
* Report abuse: The image is already locked. Report abuse sends an email with image and deletion URL's to the moderator.
* Link to this: A link that takes people to the current archive image and related comments.

Image moderation
* Logged in users may view /incoming. They can delete any image from there. The /incoming is considered a place of trash, because all images get purged in time (usually a day or two). You should only delete images that are illegal and should be taken off right away.
* Anybody (even anonymous users) may delete from the /archive, if the image is unlocked. Moderators lock images on review.
* Once an image is locked, instead of 'Delete' visitors can click 'Report abuse' which sends an e-mail. If the image is illegal and was somehow missed on review, it will be removed.

Comment moderation
* Anybody may comment, even anonymous users. Commenting is quick, and doesn't reload the whole page.
* Name can be chosen on-the-fly. If the real username is used as the anonymous handle, it will be highlighted (red).
* Chan4Chan supports freedom of speech generally, but there are some exceptions (as always).
* No spamming (URL's only if related) - no posting the same message many times (even if to different images).
* No boring troll/trap comments, repeats.
* No disgusting pedo comments for images displaying young girls etc.
* Inappropriate or overusage of comment images.
